Interstate 66

Although Interstate 66 is theoretically a mulit-state Interstate, 98% of it is in Virginia. Only a couple of miles are in Washington, DC, a fast connector to Georgetown and the Mall area. The purpose for Interstate 66 is to give a high speed connector road between the Shenandoah Valley and Washington, DC. Although some people and other state governments have wanted to extend I-66 Westward, there is no official plan on making a new road interstate standard due to the fact that Virginia does not want to extend it.

At present time, I-66 a 4 lane limited access highway from I-81 near Strasburg, VA to US-29 near Gainesville, VA. East of Gainesville, the road becomes six lanes until Manassas, afterwhich, it becomes 8 lanes with one lane in each direction serving as HOV-2 Lanes until the Capital Beltway. Inside the Capital Beltway, is a much different story. Due to community opposition for the highway when it was being built, I-66 inside the Beltway is a 4 lane, HOV-2 highway (although it is 6 lanes close in to DC). Even still, I-66 is a commuter highway and frequently gets backed up during rush hour time. At this time, there are the following exits on I-66:
