Interstate 95
Richmond to the Potomac River
Part of the highway known as I-95 currently had existed before it was given this designation.
Henry. G. Shirley Memorial Highway (I-95/395 from Woodbridge to the Potomac River) was actually
it's own freeway (designated as VA 350) from the beginning of World War II. The ending of this
freeway was what is now Exit 161 (which explains why it is so weird). Only in the late 1960s was
the I-95 designation given.*
Now in current times, I-95 is a six lane highway from Richmond (at or near the southern
interchange with I-295 to just south of Newington (Exit 166), to where it extends to 8 lanes up
to the Beltway interchange with US 1 (old VA Beltway exit 1). Also, I-95 has a reversible roadway
called HOV Lanes (High Occupancy Vehicle Lanes) before it splits off Shirley Highway to join the
Capital Beltway. Currently, this roadway is HOV-3, which means during allotted hours, you must
have at least 3 people in a car to be using that roadway. VA State Police do enforce this. You
will usually see them pulled over to the side somewhere at least once a week. The speed limit is
55 MPH from Exit 152 Northward (although it is extended down to Exit 150 currently because of
bridge repair). It is 65 MPH southward to Richomd (although I have yet to see anyone aside from
the right lane actually fllow either). Below is a list of the interchanges from I-295 northward.
