Prince William Parkway

The Prince William Parkway is one of a kind so-to-speak. This road was first envisioned by Prince William County Officials in the early 1980s, but was put on the back burner in terms of VDOT's priorities. Finally, around 1990, a county referendum passed that allowed the county to use money from bonds in order to build the highway. Starting about 1991, the highway was built in bits and pieces. The first section to open was the part between the then recently widened Minnieville Road (PWC 640) around to Smoketown Road (PWC 2000). Later on, another section opened that Horner Road (PWC 639) used after the Parkway Bridge over I-95 replaced its bridge. Continuing the next section that opened was the section between Telegraph Road and PWC 2000, followed by the stretch between Minnieville Road and Old Bridge Road (half of which used a former section of Davis Ford Road, and another half that paralled it on one side). Then, another stretch between Hoadly Road and Liberia Avenue in Manassas was opened in December of 1996. That's the way it stayed for a few years. Then, in the Summer of 2000, a new stretch of highway, which was deemed the Liberia Avenue extension because it crossed at the intersection of Manassas's Liberia Avenue, was opened. Surprising (at least to me), it was also signed the Prince William Parkway. It connected Southern Manassas to VA 234 (in a faster manner).

The Prince William Parkway has finally been completed. My guess is that this road is supposed to provide a fast connector between I-66 and I-95 because of it's coincedence of ending at the same place where the VA 234 By-Pass will end once construction is completed in approximately 2004. Although this road would not be interstate standard by any means, it could possibly become part of a Western I-95 By-Pass idea if such a thing was to ever be formally developed.
